About

The Differently Philosophy
Doing things differently makes us happy.
The best way to understand our approach is by use of an example:
Ever feel like you’re in a rut?
Some aspects of our society cause us to spend a lot of time chasing money to buy things that don’t really make our lives any more enjoyable beyond the short term excitement of the purchase or the thrill of the new. However, most of these things lose their novelty rapidly once we have them and have adapted to them.
Apart from any small implied ongoing status we might feel we derive from it, most of the excitement we get from this experience is in fact the experience of the new, making our brain work in a different way, albeit slightly. Our brains like this, the challenge makes us happy.
It's a familiar pattern but the thrill of the purchase usually wears off rapidly and so we often look for something else to purchase to recapture that excitement. We're using a familiar and unchallenging pattern of buying to access a way of giving our brains the thrill of a new experience and it costs us a fortune in the process.
Though it might seem like a contradiction our brains actually like a challenge, it’s why a lot of people like puzzles, it’s why we laugh at jokes. They are funny if they cause our brain to work in a different and unpredictable but safe way.
The ability to do things differently and make our brains work in a different way is accessible to us whenever we want.

The Team

John Baker

John's entire career has been spent in the web solutions arena. He's a web designer, developer, entrepreneur and enthusiast with a keen eye for detail and a passion for making things better. He joined BT as a software developer in 2001 and has since worked on a large number of internal web-based projects. For the last five years he has been working on developing one of BT's most critical applications. In 2009 John took the decision to reduce his time commitment to BT in an effort to find an exciting new project to work on. A few months later he attended Startup Weekend London, and a few months later he co-founded Differently Ltd.
Glen Mehn

I am an analytical problem-solver with fifteen years’ experience managing teams in entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial environments, mainly turning business requirements into technical and operational reality. I am an incurable optimist who finds opportunity in every difficulty. I write wine, beer, and food reviews, eat good food, spend a lot of time with friends, try to keep up with old friends and coworkers, read voraciously, and generally try to keep busy. I spend a lot of time thinking about (and, hopefully, being moved by) beauty and elegance in the world, and how things can get better. I write about entrepreneurship in my (limited) spare time. I suffer from a fine wine habit.

Working as a therapist in private practice and also with a Business focused hat as an Entrepreneurial Coach & Consultant, Jamie currently lives in Brighton with his wife, two dogs and a motorbike.
Blogs

We're blogging about doing things differently
We know our philosophy is a good one, and that doing things differently is a sure fire way to a happier life. We know this because each member of our team lives by the same principles upon which Differently was founded. We try to do at least one thing differently each and every day, from small challenges such as switching off the television to much larger challenges.
You can follow the journeys of each member of our team to see how we get on.
